Supporting Better Birth Experiences in Devon
Birth in Devon Statistics
In Devon, while around three-quarters of families begin breastfeeding, only six in ten are still breastfeeding at 6–8 weeks, highlighting the need for sustained community support.
Around 1 in 12 babies in England are born prematurely (before 37 weeks), increasing the likelihood that families will need additional support during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, particularly outside of clinical settings.
In Devon, birth numbers have fallen in recent years, with around a 3% drop in live births year on year, highlighting changing demographics and the importance of targeted, accessible support for families during pregnancy and early parenthood.
Statistics are based on local Devon infant feeding data and national maternity and public health data published by Devon Health for Under-5s and NHS Digital.
